Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Danny Welbeck from Brighton, while Jordan Henderson is set to join the Blues after terminating his Brentford contract by mutual consent.
The two experienced England internationals are set to become part of Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea revolution, with the new head coach looking to add greater experience and leadership to a squad that has been among the youngest in the Premier League in recent seasons.
Welbeck, 35, has agreed a two-year contract with Chelsea and has been given permission by Brighton to undergo a medical at Stamford Bridge.
A transfer fee has also been agreed between the clubs, although the figure remains undisclosed. Chelsea are hoping to complete the deal in time for Welbeck to join the squad for their pre-season preparations in Hong Kong, following their final match in Australia against Tottenham on Saturday evening.
Chelsea Target Experience Under Xabi Alonso
Welbeck’s arrival represents a significant change in Chelsea’s recruitment strategy.
The Blues have heavily prioritised young players since the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital ownership took over, but their lack of experience has increasingly been viewed as one of the reasons they have struggled to consistently challenge for major honours.
Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season and ended the campaign without a trophy.
Towards the end of the disappointing season, co-owner Behdad Eghbali admitted that the club’s recruitment model needed a “tweak”.
Alonso is now looking to bring more experience into his squad, with Welbeck and Henderson potentially playing important roles both on and off the pitch.
Danny Welbeck’s Chelsea Move
Welbeck has enjoyed an impressive career in the Premier League, having previously represented Manchester United and Arsenal before establishing himself as an important player at Brighton.
The striker has scored 90 goals in 400 Premier League appearances and is Brighton’s all-time leading Premier League goalscorer.
He joined Brighton on a free transfer from Watford in 2021 and has continued to demonstrate his value despite entering the latter stages of his career.
His experience could prove particularly valuable to a Chelsea squad packed with younger attacking players.
Welbeck’s arrival would take Chelsea’s senior striker options to six, although several could leave Stamford Bridge either permanently or on loan.
Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap and Marc Guiu are among the forwards whose futures remain uncertain.
Chelsea have also signed Dutch striker Emmanuel Emegha from sister club Strasbourg this summer, with the 21-year-old potentially remaining part of Alonso’s first-team plans.
Jordan Henderson Set to Join Chelsea
Meanwhile, Jordan Henderson is expected to complete a move to Chelsea after Brentford confirmed that they had mutually agreed to terminate the midfielder’s contract.
The 36-year-old was originally under contract with the Bees until 2027, but the agreement allows him to leave the club and pursue a move to Stamford Bridge.
Henderson spent just one season at Brentford after joining the club last summer following spells overseas with Ajax and Saudi Arabian side Al Ettifaq.
He made 34 appearances in all competitions last season as Brentford finished ninth in the Premier League.
In a statement following his departure, Henderson thanked Brentford for giving him the opportunity to return to English football.
“I leave Brentford with a lot of gratitude for the opportunity the club gave me and for the support and care shown to me and my family from day one,” Henderson said.
“Coming back to the Premier League was really important to me, and Brentford gave me that chance. I will always be thankful for that.”
Henderson Brings Liverpool Experience to Chelsea
Henderson would bring a wealth of experience to Alonso’s midfield, having spent many successful years at Liverpool.
During his time at Anfield, the former England captain won six major honours, including the Premier League and Champions League.
He would also add valuable international experience to a Chelsea squad that is still developing.
Henderson was selected by England manager Thomas Tuchel as part of the national team’s leadership group at this summer’s World Cup.
His tournament was cut short after he suffered a fractured arm and wrist during celebrations following England’s last-16 victory over Mexico.
Chelsea’s Growing List of Transfers
Chelsea’s recruitment this summer highlights Alonso’s desire to combine youth with greater experience.
The Blues have already made a club-record £117 million move for Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, with the England international having recently turned 24.
Chelsea have also agreed a deal for 26-year-old centre-back Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, with an official announcement expected.
Another potential addition is Granit Xhaka, with Chelsea reportedly making an offer to reunite the midfielder with Alonso after the pair worked together at Bayer Leverkusen during their 2024 Bundesliga title-winning campaign.
