Chelsea have completed the blockbuster signing of England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a British record transfer worth £117 million.
The 23-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge after starring for England at the FIFA World Cup, signing a six-year contract with the option of a further 12 months following a medical in London.
Speaking after the announcement, Rogers said: “I’m joining the biggest club in London. The direction this club is going is something I want to be part of. It felt like the perfect move for me and I can’t wait to get started.”
The move is one of the biggest surprises of the summer transfer window, with Arsenal widely expected to lead the race for Rogers’ signature.
However, Chelsea had been monitoring the former Aston Villa star for more than two years and identified him as their priority attacking target.
Following England’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, the Blues accelerated negotiations and completed the deal in under 48 hours.
Chelsea’s sporting directors, head coach Xabi Alonso and co-owner Behdad Eghbali all played key roles in securing the transfer.

The agreement was strengthened by the excellent relationship between Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali and Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris, with the clubs reaching a final agreement before England’s third-place victory over France.
After Chelsea’s offer was accepted, Arsenal were given the opportunity to match the £117m bid but chose to stick to their valuation, allowing the Blues to complete the signing.
The Gunners are now expected to turn their attention to alternative attacking targets, including Bradley Barcola and Junior Kroupi.
Chelsea’s pursuit of Rogers dates back more than two years, with previous discussions taking place during the 2024 Profit and Sustainability negotiations between the two clubs.
The signing also highlights a shift in Chelsea’s recruitment policy. Rather than focusing solely on young prospects, the club has moved to bring in proven, elite talent capable of making an immediate impact.
Earlier this year, co-owner Behdad Eghbali admitted Chelsea needed to add more established players to take the club to the next level, and the signing of Morgan Rogers is the clearest indication yet of that new approach.
With Rogers now officially a Chelsea player, the Blues have landed one of the Premier League’s brightest stars in a deal that could reshape the title race for years to come.
