Rangers were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Dundee United in their opening Scottish Premiership match, as Derek McInnes’ reign at Ibrox began with a frustrating result at Tannadice.
The hosts deservedly took the lead before half-time through Lachlan Rose, who netted his fourth goal of the season after a well-worked move. Rangers struggled to find their rhythm in the opening 45 minutes despite an early chance for Lawrence Shankland, whose clever backheel was denied by goalkeeper Jack Walton.
Dundee United’s opener came when Jesse Randall’s cross was cleverly left by Zac Sapsford, allowing Rose to guide a composed finish past Rangers debutant Ivor Pandur.
McInnes responded with changes at half-time, introducing Dan Neil and Youssef Chermiti, and Rangers improved significantly after the break.
The equaliser arrived in spectacular fashion on 56 minutes as Thelo Aasgaard controlled the ball before unleashing a powerful left-footed strike that flew beyond Walton to level the contest.
Both sides created opportunities in an entertaining second half, but Dundee United missed the clearest chance to snatch victory. Jesse Randall was played clean through by Daniel Bennie, only to chip his effort straight at Pandur.
In the end, neither side could find a winner, with Rangers opening their Scottish Premiership campaign with a point as McInnes continues to shape his new-look squad.
