Harry Kane scored twice in the closing stages as England completed a dramatic comeback to beat DR Congo and book their place in the FIFA World Cup last 16 after a tense encounter in Atlanta.

England were on the brink of one of the biggest upsets in their World Cup history after Brian Cipenga’s early goal gave DR Congo the lead, leaving Thomas Tuchel’s side just 15 minutes away from a stunning group-stage exit.

Despite dominating possession, England struggled to break down a resilient DR Congo defence. Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi produced a series of outstanding saves to frustrate the Three Lions, while Yoane Wissa missed a golden opportunity to double his side’s advantage when he struck the post with the goal at his mercy just before half-time.

That miss proved crucial.

England’s captain stepped up when his team needed him most. Kane powered home a header in the 75th minute to level the score, connecting with a superb cross from substitute Anthony Gordon to breathe new life into England’s World Cup campaign.

With just four minutes remaining, Kane completed the turnaround in spectacular fashion. The striker controlled the ball on the edge of the penalty area, spun away from his marker and unleashed a powerful right-footed strike into the top corner, giving Mpasi no chance and sealing a dramatic 2-1 victory.

The win sends England through to the knockout stage, where they will face co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on Monday, 6 July (01:00 BST), as they continue their bid for World Cup glory.
