FIFA has launched an investigation after American YouTube star and social media influencer IShowSpeed was allegedly subjected to racist abuse during Argentina’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Cape Verde at the FIFA Club World Cup.
The incident reportedly took place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on 3 July, where IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Jason Watkins Jr., was seen confronting an Argentina supporter while wearing a Cape Verde shirt. Footage of the exchange appeared on his YouTube channel.
In a statement, FIFA confirmed it had been made aware of the alleged incident and immediately opened an investigation.
“The FIFA World Cup is a celebration of unity, diversity and respect,” the governing body said. “It brings together people, cultures and communities from around the world, and anyone who acts in a manner that undermines these values is not welcome in our game.”
The 21-year-old content creator is one of the world’s biggest online personalities, with more than 57 million YouTube subscribers and 53 million TikTok followers.
He has been live-streaming matches throughout the tournament, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino and ex-Barcelona and AC Milan forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic appearing in some of his broadcasts.
The investigation comes just days after Kylian Mbappe condemned racist comments made by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla, prompting the French Football Federation (FFF) to announce plans to pursue criminal charges over the remarks.
