Hereford FC have completed the signing of highly-rated attacking midfielder Billy Phillips on a one-year contract following his departure from Championship club Bristol City.
The 19-year-old joins the Bulls ahead of the new season and arrives at the MandM Edgar Street Stadium looking to build on an impressive campaign in the National League South.
Former Bristol City Academy Talent Joins the Bulls
Born in Bristol, Phillips came through Bristol City’s academy after joining at Under-14 level. He developed into one of the club’s brightest young prospects and played alongside current Hereford defender Joseph James in the Robins’ youth side.
The pair were part of the Bristol City team that reached the FA Youth Cup semi-finals in 2024, with Phillips scoring the decisive goal in the quarter-final victory over Swindon Town to secure a last-four clash against eventual winners Manchester City.
His performances earned him a two-year professional contract with Bristol City, although he did not make a senior appearance during his time at Ashton Gate. He was, however, named in the first-team matchday squad for the Championship fixture against Norwich City in October 2024.
Valuable National League South Experience
To continue his development, Phillips spent last season gaining senior experience in the National League South.
After an initial loan spell with Bath City, he moved to Chippenham Town, where he made 21 appearances and scored three goals, impressing with his direct attacking style and creativity in the final third.
Aaron Downes Delighted With New Signing
Hereford manager Aaron Downes believes Phillips will bring excitement and quality to the squad this season.
“I’m really pleased to get Billy signed up with us. He had a great loan spell with Chippenham towards the end of last season and is a lively player.
“He’s someone who is comfortable on the ball in tight areas and enjoys taking defenders on in one-on-one situations, which I’m sure our supporters will enjoy watching.
“I’m delighted we’ve been able to complete the deal and look forward to seeing what he can bring to the team this season.”
Phillips Adds Creativity to Hereford FC Squad
Capable of playing as an attacking midfielder or on either wing, Phillips is expected to strengthen Hereford’s attacking options with his pace, technical ability and confidence in possession.
The former Bristol City youngster becomes another exciting addition for Aaron Downes as Hereford continue to shape their squad ahead of the new campaign.
