Gonçalo Ramos scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Portugal completed a stunning comeback against Croatia, booking their place in the FIFA World Cup last 16 with a thrilling 2-1 victory.

Cristiano Ronaldo also made history by scoring his first-ever goal in a World Cup knockout match, helping Portugal recover after falling behind in an entertaining contest that looked destined for extra time.

Ramos Heads Portugal Into the Last 16

With the clock ticking into the 94th minute, substitute Gonçalo Ramos produced the decisive moment. Rising above two Croatian defenders, he powered a header past the goalkeeper from an excellent Rafael Leão cross, sparking wild celebrations among the Portugal players and supporters.

Croatia thought they had forced extra time deep into added time when Joško Gvardiol bundled the ball into the net. However, a lengthy VAR review ruled the goal out for offside after replays showed Igor Matanović made a slight touch before the ball reached Mario Pašalić, who was in an offside position during the build-up.

Croatia Strike First Despite Portugal’s Bright Start

Portugal controlled much of the opening half with the majority of possession and attacking opportunities, but Croatia came out strongly after the interval.

Ivan Perišić broke the deadlock eight minutes into the second half, firing into the bottom corner after Rúben Dias could only partially clear a dangerous cross.

Croatia nearly doubled their advantage moments later when Igor Matanović found the net, but the assistant referee flagged Nikola Vlašić offside in the build-up, with VAR confirming the decision.

Ronaldo Makes World Cup Knockout History

Portugal responded with increased intensity as Rafael Leão struck the crossbar with a curling effort before Cristiano Ronaldo had a delicate chipped finish ruled out for a marginal offside.

The breakthrough eventually arrived from the penalty spot. Following a VAR review, Portugal were awarded a spot-kick after Renato Veiga was fouled inside the penalty area from a corner.

Ronaldo calmly converted the penalty to level the score, marking his first-ever goal in the knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup and giving Portugal renewed belief.

Croatia Continue to Threaten

Croatia refused to back down and continued to create chances.

Mateo Kovačić forced goalkeeper Diogo Costa into two excellent saves before denying Matanović in a one-on-one situation.

Petar Sučić also thought he had restored Croatia’s lead after finishing confidently from a perfectly weighted Kovačić through ball, but the offside flag was raised once again.

Ronaldo was substituted in the 81st minute and appeared frustrated as he left the pitch, while Renato Veiga and Mario Pašalić both missed headed opportunities during a frantic closing spell.

Portugal Set Up Spain Showdown

Just as extra time appeared inevitable, Ramos delivered the decisive blow with his towering header to send Portugal into the next round.

Portugal will now face European champions Spain in the FIFA World Cup last 16, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
